CAT Action Trust Lanark & Central(formally known as CAT Lanarkshire) are a very enthusiastic cat charity based in Lanarkshire and Bonnybridge in Scotland. We have fosterers in Lanark, Blackwood and Bonnybridge. We rescue any type of cat in need of our help. If we have the shelter space, we help the cat, it’s as simple as that, whether they are domestic, abandoned, stray, as well as offering the help of neutering and re-siting of feral cats too. We also run subsidised neutering, vaccination and micro-chipping programmes, which can help some cat owners with their cats. Details of these can be seen in the help section here.

The cat cases we deal with range widely and you can see some of the cats we have helped featured under the headings; Success Stories and Special Cases, in which some kitties having been in very dire, near death critical situations. At CAT Lanark & Central we aim to be the home of happy contented cats. We are very passionate about our voluntary work and strive to improve every cats quality of life going forward. For some we are their last hope and many come into care at such a low ebb. But finding that loving, forever home and getting such positive feedback is thoroughly worthwhile and rewarding for us volunteers. It’s simply why we exist and gives us that sense of achievement and for some of the rescued cats it can be just like a “rags to riches” story sometimes. Which is absolutely fabulous.

We rescue about 400 cats and kittens per annum, but we never put a healthy cat to sleep and every penny goes to the cats in care, as we are all volunteers giving our time freely. Although we are very much a self-funding branch, we are really struggling to survive right now. As we receive no government funding or financial help whatsoever.

We find we help a lot of stray and abandoned cats. Helping them get in out of the sheer cold and into warmth, with good regular meals and into a safe environment, prior to re-homing.

We also are very heavily committed to neutering and rehoming, re-siting or returning to site feral and stray cats found in large cat colonies:-

We have just completed neutering and returning a colony of 22 cats at South Draffan.

We are still dealing with a large cat colony of possibly about 20 cats at a re-cycling plant in Grangemouth. Most cats have been trapped, neutered and returned, although some have been resited. Hopefully more cats can be resited from here too. If we have more outside suitable homes, such as small holdings, stables or good farms for these cats with regular food and shelter.

We are nearly finished dealing with a cat colony of 28 problematic cats, that a lady died and left in Braehead(Forth).

We have just taken on another colony of only about 6 cats to infiltrate(neuter and rehome/return to site) in Glespin.

So please bear this in mind if thinking of donating, as we can only continue to help as many of these large colonies of cats and with their many countless kittens, with your kind ongoing help and we do this over and above our regular cat rescue works. We are really struggling to finance the re-roofing and refurbishment of our main cat shelters in Lanark. Our shelters have served their time well for us over the past 17 years, but now require urgent attention(leaking roof, rotten timbers, limited heating, etc) to enable each cats stay with us even more comfortable, whilst they are with us looking for that loving permanent, loving homes of their own.

Apart from thinking about donating to us, you may wish to become a CAT volunteer instead, to help with our fundraising and to help fund and grow our charity. If interested in this area and you could possibly help to man a stall at Pets at Home in Hamilton, we'd really be glad to hear from you(see our Fundraise & Donate section).
